Hubble Space Telescope recently found a galaxy, named z8_GND_5296, which is finally confirmed to be the most distant yet galaxy with a redshift of 7.51, beating the previous record-holder with a redshift of 7.21. The term ‘redshift’ refers to color-change on a scale. The further an object moves away, the longer light waves stretch and the redder an object becomes.
With the help of ground-based Keck Observatory in Hawaii, it has been confirmed that the galaxy is about 30 billion light-years away from the earth, meaning it is 13.1 billion years old. After calculations, z8_GND_5296 is learned to appear in 700 million years after the Big Bang, according to Lead researcher Steven Finkelstein, from the University of Texas at Austin, US. Such discovery helps scientists shed light on the period that immediately followed the Big Bang as well as physical processes that dominate galaxy formation and galaxy evolution. Continue reading
